Born in the Rapidan country in 1922, James enlisted in the spring of 1942. He landed on Omaha Beach on the morning of June 6 and was killed three days later in the hedgerows of Normandy. He was twenty-two years old.
“He was the quietest of us. Always was. Quiet boys make the best soldiers, my father used to say.”
His name is among the Orange County service members whose sacrifice the permanent memorial at Chatter Island will honor for generations.
